- FTSAVER 1.0
- Fractal Screen Saver for Windows
- (c) Bourbaki, Inc. 1993
- (208)342-5849
- OVERVIEW
- ========
- Instead of displaying animated fish, flashing lines, disintegrating screens...,
- the FRACTOOLS SCREEN SAVER takes the concept to new heights with slide shows
- of beautiful fractals. Images dissolve, explode, pour, and spiral from one to
- the next, with gorgeous fluidly changing colors. One cannot help appreciating
- the magnificent geometry and designs inherent in fractals.
-
- Designed, by definition, to take over your screen with engaging visual stimulus
- during idle periods, screen savers can provide a powerful incentive to do
- nothing. With this in mind, what better and more engaging visual stimulation
- could you have than fractals.
-
- The FRACTOOLS SCREEN SAVER is designed to randomly load FRACTOOLS .FF0 fractal
- format files, from a specified directory, or branch of directories. They can
- be loaded off the FRACTOOLS CD, or you can copy a select group of .FF0 files
- from the CD to a directory on your hard disk. The directory is specified when
- you Set Up the screen saver in the Windows Desktop.
-
- INSTALLATION and SET UP
- =======================
- To INSTALL FTSAVER as your Windows 3.1 Screen Saver, from the DOS prompt:
-
- * Change into the FTSAVER directory - e.g. CD \FTSAVER
- * Type - INSTALL - and press <ENTER> and follow the prompts
-
- This will copy all the associated files into the WINDOWS directory, and install
- "The Force" program icon in the Start Up group. Note - "The Force" can be used
- to set up and/or "force" ANY screen saver.
-
- To Install "The Force" on the Desktop, the first time after installation:
-
- * Open the Start Up group window
- * Double click on "The Force" icon to install it on the Desktop
-
- To Set Up the Screen Saver:
-
- * Click on "The Force" icon on the desktop, and Select Setup
-
- THE .FF0 IMAGE DIRECTORY
- ========================
- The screen saver will load .FF0 fractal files from the specified directory.
- The directory can be any "IMAGE" directory on the CD. Like the FracShow
- program, FTSAVER will load images from different directories off of, or
- "below," the selected directory. To load images from a select group of
- images, copy them from the CD to a directory on your hard disk, and specify
- it as the image directory.
-
- To specify the .FF0 Image Directory:
-
- * Enter the DRIVE and the FULL PATH to the directory
-
- For example, assuming your CD ROM drive is drive F:, to load images from ALL
- the 640x480 image directories on the FracTools CD, you would enter:
-
- F:\6X4IMAGE
-
- To load 640x480 images from just the PATTERNS directory, you would enter:
-
- F:\6X4IMAGE\PATTERNS
-
- OTHER OPTIONS
- =============
- When setting up the screen saver, you can also specify:
-
- * Random Image Sequence
- * Kaleidoscoped Images
- * Sign-On Image
- * Sign-On Sound
- * Mouse Movement Termination
-
- Random Option
- -------------
- The Random option enables you to specify the order that images are loaded from
- a directory. The default setting has Random checked, which will result in
- images being loaded in random order from the specified directory(s). If you
- click on Random, to turn it Off, images will load in alphabetical order.
-
- Random will provide the most diversity. However, a good example of using
- Linear would be using the images in the \6X4IMAGE\CAMSZOOM directory. These
- images represent a "zoom" sequence that starts deep in the Mandelbrot Set and
- backs out to the fringe of the Set. Running this show in the default Linear
- order will illustrate and display this series of images, in the order they
- were generated.
-
- To enable this option:
-
- * Click on the radio button to the left of the option
-
- A "check mark" indicates the option is enabled.
-
- Kaleidoscope Option
- -------------------
- The Kaleidoscope option enables you to have all images in a show load such
- that they are mirrored horizontally and vertically. This feature is
- especially effective with non-symmetrical images, like the PATTERNS images.
-
- Note - Due to the additional processing involved in "Kaleidoscoping" images,
- activating this feature will slow things down a little. This is reflected in
- a longer dwell in an image, while the next image loads into memory.
-
- To enable this option:
-
- * Click on the radio button to the left of the option
-
- Sign-On Image Option
- --------------------
- The Sign On Image can be any bitmap (.BMP) file you want. To change the Sign On
- Image specification:
-
- * Click on the "List Box" button to display a list of bitmap files (.BMP)
- * Click on one of the bitmap files in the list to select it
-
- Sign-On Sound Option
- --------------------
- If you have a Sound Card, you can specify a Sign On Sound, which can be any
- sound (.WAV) file you want. To change the Sign On Sound specification:
-
- * Click on the "List Box" button to display a list of sound files (.WAV)
- * Click on one of the sound files in the list to select it
-
- Note - To play sounds, you need a sound card, with sampled sound capability,
- supported by Windows.
-
- Moving Mouse Ends Show Option
- -----------------------------
- This option enables you to specify whether moving the mouse will terminate a
- slide show and return to Windows.
-
- To enable this option:
-
- * Click on the check box to the left of the option
-
- A "check mark" indicates the option is enabled.
-
- If you are using the Desktop, to complete the process, specify the desired
- Delay, then click on OK to exit.
-
- RUNNING the FRACTOOLS SCREEN SAVER
- ==================================
- After the Delay specified in the Control Panel / Desktop setting for the
- installed screen saver, the screen will go blank and the Sign On Image will
- be displayed, and the Sign On Sound (if any was specified) will be played.
- Next an image will load and the show will begin. To EXIT the show and return
- to something more productive - Press any key or click either mouse button -
- or move the mouse, if set up to respond to the mouse.
-
- DISABLING the FRACTOOLS SCREEN SAVER
- ====================================
- To prevent the screen saver from being activated after the specified timeout,
- move the mouse pointer to the UPPER LEFT CORNER of the screen.
-
- "THE FORCE" Utility
- ===================
- The Force (THEFORCE.EXE) is a generic screen saver utility that can be used
- with ANY screen saver program. It enables you to "force" the screen saver On.
- It also has an option enabling you to Set Up or configure the currently active
- screen saver program. To use The Force, we recommend installing it in your
- Start Up group. To do this, from the PROGRAM MANAGER:
-
- * Open the START UP Group window
- * Select FILE, then NEW from the Program Manager menu
- * In the New Program Object menu, with Program Item selected, click OK
- * Type - The Force - for the Description
- * Type - THEFORCE - for the Command Line specification
- * Click on RUN MINIMIZED to put it on the Desktop when starting up Windows
- * Click on OK to exit
-
- Double click on "The Force" icon, to put it on the Desktop, then close the
- StartUp group. To run it, click on it and select "Force" screen saver, or
- "Setup".
-
- VIDEO MODES
- ===========
- The FRACTOOLS SCREEN SAVER has been designed as a 256 color SuperVGA program.
- We strongly suggest running Windows 3.1 specific video drivers, in any one of
- the 256 color modes your system supports. The screen saver will run in 16
- colors, however, the dynamic nature of the palette effects and shows will be
- greatly diminished.
-
- To change video modes in Windows, (if you are running in a 16 color mode):
-
- * Open the Main group, then click on WINDOWS SETUP
- * Select Options, then select CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS
- * Display the List Box for the DISPLAY OPTION, and select the desired mode
-
- NOTE -You MUST select a mode and an associated driver that was designed
- SPECIFICALLY for your video card !! You may need to install additional
- drivers that came on a disk with your video board. To do this, select the
- last item in the Display list - "Other display [Requires disk from OEM]."
- You will be prompted to insert a disk (supplied with your video card), select
- the driver(s) you want. You will then be prompted to insert disks from your
- Windows master disk set.
-
- * When finished - Click on OK - Windows will prompt you to Restart in the
- new mode
-
- FRACTOOLS SCREEN SAVER FILES
